Xpat Travels - South African sun and Safari in the middle of Swedish Winter
In February this year my best friend and I went to South Africa for 2 unbelievable weeks of sun, safari and sightseeing! I already know I will go back again and next time with my boyfriend – I could do the exact same holiday all over again!
When Sofia and I were looking for a last minute holiday we were surfing the internet for information and came across Travel For Life and really liked the look of their website Travelforlife. We filled in the enquiry and the next day I received a call from Adam in South Africa which was really nice because I was left with a better idea of how to plan the trip to South Africa. They organised all our accommodation, internal flights, car rental and even some of the activities.
We had 3 nights in Cape Town in De Waterkant where we got a guide with car for the second day to do the Cape Peninsula visiting Cape Point, Boulder’s Beach and Simon’s Town. We didn’t rent a car in Cape Town but spent the other 2 days using the red buses that tour the city centre and all the attractions so we went up Table Mountain, had lunch in Camps Bay by the beach and afternoon shopping at the V&A Waterfront. After three nights in Cape Town we picked up our rental car and drove to the Winelands for 2 wonderful nights in Stellenbosch. This is a gorgeous town and I will definitely come back and spend longer here on our next trip. We did several wine farms by day and checked out the university night life by night. We also went to Franschhoek which is only 40 minutes away and very picturesque.
After our stay in the Winelands we drove to the airport in Cape Town and flew to the Kruger Park for a 4 night safari! We spent 2 nights at Rhino Post and 2 nights at Plains Camp. At Rhino Post we slept in luxury tents and were overwhelmed by the setting in the middle of the bush were 2 days were spent relaxing by the pool between game drives, exchanging stories of animal encounters and eating.
From Rhino Post we were transferred to the sister lodge Plains Camp for our last 2 nights in South Africa. The lodge gave an authentic feel of an explorer’s home away from home in the real African bush. After a laze about in the pool and some late lunch we set off on a bush walk Together with two rangers and four other guests we had a 2 hour walk ahead of us until we arrived at the sleep out. Only when we were sitting 2 meters above the ground looking around us did we realise we had walked 2 hours in the Kruger Park! We saw lots of giraffes and even rhino very close by and we watched elephants feeding from a safe distance. After a delicious dinner over a lit fire we went to sleep in our tents 6 meters off the ground. The next morning and after dismantling our tents we set off on a four hour bush walk back to the lodge where breakfast was waiting. It is an unbelievable experience. After a delicious breakfast we spent the rest of the day in the plunge pool and looking through our photos! And then we were eating again. The afternoon drive was great with sundowners by the dam and then on the way back to the lodge we found 2 gorgeous lionesses with four cubs resting by a tree. Dinner back at Plains Camp was wonderful and feeling exhausted we went back to our tent to enjoy our last night on safari in a real safari tent! We didn’t get much sleep but were ready for our morning game drive at 05.00 and it was awesome we saw a herd of buffalo by the dam so have now seen four of the Big Five only one missing was the leopard! Our last few hours in South Africa and we are already planning a return trip with the boyfriends. Anyone wanting to travel to South Africa should definitely get in touch with Travel For Life who were amazing and gave us exactly the holiday we were after.
